LIHUE, Kauai'i - Long Beach State junior Kevin Techakanokboon fired a 1-under-par 71 in Wednesday's opening round of the 38th annual John A. Burns Intercollegiate, tying for 10th place at Wailua Golf Course.
LBSU completed the first day of competition at 4-over 292, tying for seventh with UTEP.
Fourth-ranked California leads the 17-team field at 10-under 278 as the Golden Bears holds a seven shot lead over Arizona (-3) in second and eight strokes over No. 12 Texas A&M (-2) in third.
Techakanokboon started the round from the par-5 10th, posting three birdies and three bogeys to finish the back-nine at even. After making the turn onto the front-nine, the junior from Cerritos collected three additional birdies to finish out the round at 1-under.
Junior JJ Holen is one stroke back after carding an even-72 to tie for 18th.
Sophomore Kevin Lee is tied for 40th at 2-over, while fellow classmate Daniel Chain is one shot back at 3-over and tied for 51st.
Freshman Agostino Milazzo tied for 67th with a 76.
Erik Oja of Arizona sits on top of the leaderboard at 8-under 64, followed by Joel Stalter of California (-5).
Second round action continues on Thursday with the 49ers teeing off at 10:50 a.m. (PST) from the first tee. LBSU will be paired with the Aggies, Saint Mary's and Washington State.
