IRVINE, Calif. - For the third time this season, Ashley Murray has been selected as the Big West's Freshman of the Week. All three honors have come in the last six weeks for the first-year middle blocker.
Murray leads Long Beach State in blocking this season with 1.22 blocks per set. Her average goes up in the Beach's undefeated conference season to a team-leading 1.31 per set. In a pair of sweep last weekend, Murray compiled eleven blocks for an average of 1.83 blocks per set.
She had four blocks in the first set alone of LBSU's sweep over UC Santa Barbara on her way to a seven-block night. Murray continues to lead all Big West freshmen in blocking and is the only freshman in the conference to lead her team in the category.
The Torrance, Calif. native also hit .533 with nine kills in the Friday night sweep of Cal Poly and tallied five more kills against UCSB. Murray is the only freshman in the Big West's top-10 in hitting percentage, ranking fourth in the conference while hitting at a .336 clip this season.
With Murray's third award, the Beach has now won at least one of the Big West's three weekly awards in each of the last three weeks and five out of the last six weeks. The Beach heads out for its final regular season road trip this week with only one more win needed to clinch at least a share of the Big West title.
