LONG BEACH, Calif. - Bre Mackie added another first to a season of firsts for the senior as she was recognized as the Sports Imports/AVCA National Player of the Week on Tuesday. Mackie led Long Beach State to a five-set win over then-No. 21 Hawaii on Saturday with a career night on both sides of the net.
Mackie, a senior from Redding, Calif., is the tenth player in Long Beach State's storied history to earn the weekly award from the AVCA. She is the first to do so since Nov. 29, 2011 when Janisa Johnson earned the honor. She is also the first player out of the Big West to earn the award since Hawaii's Emily Hartong got the nod on October 30, 2012.
Mackie had career-bests of 20 kills, nine total blocks and eight digs in the win over the Wahine that kept the Beach flawless in Big West matches with a 4-0 record and alone in first place. She took a career-high and team-leading 49 swings on Saturday, committing just four errors for a .327 hitting percentage.
Her career night comes in the middle of what is proving to be a career year for the senior right-side hitter. She leads the Beach with 2.88 kills per set, ranks second among the hitters with a .314 hitting percentage and leads the team with 1.25 blocks per set. All marks are well ahead of her career-bests. Mackie also ranks second on the team with 15 aces, despite not being asked to serve until her senior season, and averages just below one dig per set.
After crucial back-to-back wins at home against CSUN and Hawai'i, LBSU heads back out on the road this week to face UC Santa Barbara on Friday and Cal Poly on Saturday.
