LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior Bre Mackie has been selected as the Big West's Player of the Week after leading Long Beach State to the five-set win over Hawai'i on Saturday. Mackie had a career night in the big win to earn the first weekly honor of her career.
Mackie threw down 20 kills, including the last one of the match, for a career-high on the attack. She put up another career-high on the defensive side of the net with nine total blocks while equaling her career-high of eight digs. She scored a total of 26 points in the match, which is the most by anyone on the team this season.
In a team-high 49 swings against Hawaii, Mackie made just four errors for a .327 hitting percentage in the Beach's first five-set win of the year. With the win, LBSU solidified its early season position on top of the Big West standing with an unblemished 4-0 record.
The senior from Redding, Calif. has emerged as a top option for the Beach with a team-best 2.88 kills per set average and a .314 hitting percentage. Both marks are, by far, the best averages of her career. She also leads the squad with 1.25 blocks per set, which is another career-best average.
Mackie is the first Long Beach State selection for Player of the Week since teammate Chisom Okpala earned the honor as a sophomore on Nov. 26, 2012. Fellow senior Tyler Jackson has been recognized twice this season as the Defensive Player of the Week.
The Beach takes its four-match win streak and first-place standing on the road next weekend for matches at UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly.
