LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team continued to put on an offensive show, defeating Cincinnati, 4-1, for its second-straight win Friday night at George Allen Field.
The 49ers (2-2-0) have now scored seven goals and totaled 13 assists in their last two games.
Sophomore Elizabeth Lyons led the way against the Bearcats (1-4-0) as she had a goal and assisted on the other three. Her three assists ties her for second with Nadia Link in the LBSU single-game record books.
Senior Eileen Maes registered her second goal of the year, while sophomore Hannah Sanders and freshman Hannah Reed also found the back of the net. Sanders added a pair of helpers.
LBSU controlled the tempo from the opening whistle, owning an 11-to-5 advantage in shot attempts. Maes and Reed both finished with a game-high three each.
Maes started the scoring with her 11th career goal at the 53:02 mark. Sanders initiated the play, driving down the middle of the field and finding Lyons on the right side of the box. Lyons quickly crossed it into the middle where Maes was able to punch it past the goalkeeper and inside the far post.
Just over nine minutes later, Lyons netted the eventual game-winner on a perfect lead pass from Ashley Webb. Sanders once again started the play by getting the ball to Webb on the left side.
Cincinnati cut the deficit in half at the 66:00 mark, but Sanders gave the 49ers some breathing room in the 73rd minute. Lyons delivered a cross to the far post from the right side where freshman Mimi Rangel tapped it to Sanders, who scored on one-touch from about six yards out.
Reed added one more goal for good measure in the 82nd minute. She was able to slip the ball past the oncoming goalie on a lead pass from Lyons.
Sophomore Kaci McCain started and played the entire 90 minutes at goalkeeper for LBSU, finishing with one save. McCain improved to 2-0 on the young season.
Katy Couperus scored the Bearcats' lone goal, while Callie Taylor had a team-best two shots.
Long Beach State is back in action at George Allen Field on Sunday, Sept. 8, when it entertains Loyola Marymount at 6 p.m.
