Box Score

San Francisco, Calif. - Down 10-9 against the host San Francisco Dons in set five, Long Beach State ripped off six straight points to pick up an exciting victory in the team's second five-set match of the day, winning 25-16, 29-27, 9-25, 24-26, 15-10. Freshman Joy Miley had 12 kills on .348 hitting and nine blocks in her first match for Long Beach State.

Even at 10-10 after an exhausting day with two five-set matches, it was the 49ers that dug deep to capture the victory. A big block from Erin Juley and Bre Mackie kick-started the run on serve for Long Beach State, as the 49ers took advantage of two errors from Dons hitters and finished off the win with kills from Aigner-Swesey and Miley.

The 49ers had a dominant night at the net, finishing with 17 total blocks, with Miley and Chisom Okpala leading the way, as the junior middle blocker added eight blocks of her one. Offensively, the team was once again led by Delainey Aigner-Swesey, who made 18 kills and 10 digs for her second straight double-double. Juley also had a career night for the 49ers, leading the team with 19 digs, surpassing her career high, while handing out 43 assists.

Long Beach State (2-3) came out with a big win in the first set. Down 7-3 early, the 49ers rallied to tie the set at nine after a five-point push, and took their first lead of the set at 11-10. The 49ers utilized another big push to take an 18-12 lead, capped by an Aigner-Swesey kill, and hit .405 in the first set on the way to a 25-16 set one win.

San Francisco (0-4) again took an early lead in the second set, forcing the 49ers into a timeout at 17-14. The Dons in fact held the lead all the way until 23-21, but a kill by Aigner-Swesey and an ace from Chelsea Cabrajac tied the set at 23, and the 49ers scored once more to take the lead. The 49ers held the service advantage the rest of the way, until Alex Reid was able to close out the set 29-27 with an ace.

The Dons rallied for a convincing set three victory, forcing the 49ers into negative hitting while finishing on .387 hitting as a team in the set. San Francisco scored 13 of the first 16 points, and cruised to a 25-9 set three victory.

The fourth set was similar to the second, with 11 tie scores and five lead changes forcing the action down to the wire, with ties at each point from 18-18 on until the end. Both teams had three blocks in the set, but a late miscue by the 49ers gave the Dons the lead, and a kill by Katarina Pilepic forced the match to a fifth set.
