Long Beach, Calif, - Long Beach State will present its 2013 National Championship Sand Volleyball team their commemorative rings in a ceremony to be held prior to the women's volleyball team's second match of the season against No. 18 Florida State on Saturday, August 31.
The timing is particularly appropriate since the 49ers matched up with the Seminoles on their way to the title last spring, defeating Florida State 3-2 in the quarterfinals in Gulf Shores, Ala., at the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championship.
Six members of the 2013 women's volleyball team were members of the championship squad, and the team is welcoming back its other members to the Walter Pyramid on Saturday as well as the 2013 coaching staff, which included head coach Matt Ulmer, Assistant Coach Erika Chidester, and Volunteer Assistant Coach Misty May-Treanor, who will be on hand to receive her ring on Saturday evening.
Junior libero Tyler Jackson went through the 2013 season with an unblemished 27-0 record, highlighting the sand accomplishments of the current indoor 49ers who will be playing Saturday, joined by Alex Reid, Erin Juley, Bre Mackie, Chelsea Cabrajac, and Delainey Aigner-Swesey.
The ceremony will be held prior to the final match of the day Saturday, scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. The meeting between Florida State and the 49ers will be the second match of the day as part of the three-day Long Beach State Mizuno Invitational, which features four teams included in the preseason Top 25 poll, with No. 17 Kentucky and No. 18 Florida State each ranked, while Long Beach State and Illinois are both receiving votes.
The 49ers will begin the season this Friday night, August 30, hosting Illinois at 7:30 p.m. in the Walter Pyramid. The tournament will begin earlier in the day with neutral matches featuring Florida State vs. Illinois at 11 a.m., and Florida State vs. Kentucky at 5 p.m.
