HONOLULU, Hawaii - - The four-match winning streak came to a close on the islands as the Long Beach State women's volleyball team fell 25-27, 25-19, 25-18, 25-22 at No. 13 Hawaii on Saturday. The Beach (12-10, 5-4 Big West) made a long run to capture the first set but hit .128 in the match as it fell in the next three sets.
Bre Mackie had 11 kills - seven of which came in the first two sets - and hit .222 as one of the leaders for the Beach. Delainey Aigner-Swesey had a team-high 15 kills and 15 digs while Alex Reid also had a double-double with 12 kills and 12 digs.
Chisom Okpala had another efficient night out of the middle with nine kills on 22 swing, and she did not make an error to hit .409.
Seven kills from Emily Hartong propelled Hawaii (18-4, 7-3 Big West) to a 24-20 lead in the first set. Tai Manu-Olevao added in five kills for the hosts as they appeared to have the first set wrapped up. However, Taylor Johnson came in to serve five points in a row for the Beach as the 49ers erased the deficit and ended up with set point.
Hartong's seventh kill avoided the clinching point but Aigner-Swesey and Okpala put down back-to-back kills to take a 1-0 Beach lead in the match. Mackie had five kills to lead the Beach in the set.
The Rainbow Wahine controlled nearly all of the second and third sets, building 4-1 leads to start both sets and never trailing. The Beach climbed with one early in the second set but could never erase the early deficit as Hawaii hit .364 compared the .111 percentage for the Beach.
The Wahine lead reached double digits late in the third set and grew to as much as 23-9. The Beach made a late run behind six consecutive serves from Tyler Jackson but a sideout from Hawaii clinched the set at 25-18 and a 2-1 match advantage.
The wave of momentum swayed in the fourth as the Beach jumped out to the 4-1 lead. Chelsea Cabrajac's fourth ace of the match grew the lead to 13-8 and a later kill from Aigner-Swesey put the lead at its greatest at 17-12. The Wahine then put together a run that capped with a kill from Kalei Adolpho, tying the match at 18-18.
Reid put the Beach back out on top from the time-being but another Adolpho kill and a Beach attack error put Hawaii back on top for the first time since the initial point in the set. Mackie tied the match back up at 22-22 before Hawaii scored the final three points to clinch the set and the match.
The Beach were plagued by errors on the attack and in the service game. The Beach hit .128 in the match and were below .100 in each of the final two sets. On the other end, Hawaii was over .300 in the first three sets and hit .271 in the match.
The Beach is back at Walter Pyramid next Friday from a 7 p.m. match with UC Davis.
