Long Beach State Starts Extended Road Trip At Kansas State

RIGHT AWAY
Long Beach State had its best performance offensively of the season Thursday, despite the loss, scoring 74 points on 51.9 percent (27-52) shooting. The 49ers also had three players scoring in double figures, as junior A.J. Spencer joined regular double-digit scorers Mike Caffey and Dan Jennings with more than 10 points.
Senior Dan Jennings has averaged a double-double through three games in 2013-14, with 14.7 points and 12.0 rebounds per game. Jennings has hit double-figures in scoring in all three games, and has two double-doubles on the season, while coming just short with eight rebounds with 16 points on the road at Arizona last Monday.
Long Beach State will take one of its longest road trips in school history, spending 10 days on the road total while playing four games. The 49ers will travel a total of 7,156 miles on the trip, starting with a game at Kansas State before participating in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
With Saturday's win over Hawaii Pacific, Long Beach State head coach Dan Monson tied Seth Greenberg with 105 wins at Long Beach State. That mark ranks tied for second in school history. Jerry Tarkanian has the most victories as a 49er head coach, winning 122 games from 1968 to 1973.

THE PLAYERS
Junior Mike Caffey received Preseason All-Big West honors, one of six players picked one season after earning First-Team All-Big West honors as a sophomore. Through three games, Mike Caffey leads the 49ers in scoring with 18.7 points per game, and has scored over 20 points twice on the year. Caffey is also leading the team with 13 assists, and is third in rebounding with 5.0 boards per game.
ABOUT KANSAS STATE
The Wildcats were shocked by Northern Colorado in their first game of the season, falling 60-58 in their home opener. Kansas State recovered to beat Oral Roberts last Wednesday, and will play their third home game against the 49ers on Sunday before joining Long Beach State in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off.
Head Coach Bruce Weber is in his second season at Kansas State after leading the Wildcats to a 27-8 record last year. Weber took over for Frank Martin, who left for South Carolina at the end of the 2011-12 season.
Freshman guard Marcus Foster has led the Wildcats through two games, averaging 16.5 points per game, shooting 36.4% from beyond the arc on the season. Also averaging double-figures for Kansas State is sophomore forward D.J. Johnson.
Kansas State defeated Long Beach State in the last meeting between the teams in the championship game of the Diamondhead Classic in Hawaii in 2011. Only Mike Caffey and Nick Shepherd for the 49ers played in that game, while four current Wildcats saw action, led by Will Spradling, who scored 17 points.
Long Beach State won the last game between the two teams at Bramlage Coliseum, riding two 20-point performances from Rudy Williams and Mate Milisa to a 70-64 victory on January 4, 2000. Williams finished with a double-double, while the Wildcats were led by Galen Morrison, who had 18 points.
Head Coach Dan Monson has announced that Kansas State will return to Long Beach in 2014-15 as part of the home slate in the Walter Pyramid next season for the 49ers.

After the Kansas State game, Long Beach State opens up the Puerto Rico Tip-Off Thursday against No. 7 Michigan at 2 p.m. PT on ESPN2. The 49ers will then have two more games in San Juan on Friday, and Sunday.
