Whittier, Calif. - No. 7 Long Beach State defeated their hosts Saturday, topping Whittier 10-6 in the final game of the day at the site in the Gary Troyer Memorial Tournament. Senior Devin Mefford scored four goals to lead Long Beach State in the win.

Long Beach State (12-3) extended their winning streak to four games as the 49ers never trailed against Whittier (8-10). Goaltender Pavo Ljepopio and the 49ers were able to shut out the Poets in the first quarter while Mefford scored twice to spot Long Beach State a 2-0 lead. The 49ers surrendered their first goal of the game to Nicolas Beavers with six minutes remaining in the half, but the 49ers scored two more goals to take a 4-1 lead before taking a 4-2 edge into the break.

Long Beach State exploded four five goals in the third period, as Mefford again found the net twice in the period, and Joey Fabian also scored two of his three goals while Conner Reilly added a goal as well. Leading 9-5 going into the final period, the 49ers and Poets each scored once in the fourth as Long Beach State cruised home for a 10-6 victory.

Long Beach State continues tournament action with two more games on Saturday. First, the 49ers will take on Cal Baptist in the morning before again playing their hosts as the 49ers change sites, facing Pomona-Pitzer at 6:20 p.m.
