Long Beach, Calif. - Last Saturday, Long Beach State Athletics and CSULB University Police participated in the first joint community service between the two operations, assisting with a major cleanup effort at the Long Beach Boys and Girls Club. Over 125 volunteers between the two organizations were able to assist in the local effort.
Wishing to put a larger footprint into the local community, Athletic Director Vic Cegles put forth a vision of Long Beach State Athletics and the CSULB University Police working together to make a positive impact in the Long Beach State community. That idea came into fruition this Saturday, in the first effort of its kind between the two campus groups.
Spending over five hours at the Long Beach Boys and Girls club, the large group of workers consisting of 49er student-athletes, coaches and staff along with police department volunteers were able to power wash the building, repaint a number of walls, do significant gardening duties as well as major cleanup of the facility's kitchen and gym.
Long Beach State Life Skills Coordinator Candice Chick was instrumental in organizing the effort. "It's always a great feeling to be able to give back to the local community," said Chick. "Additionally, it was a wonderful opportunity for our coaches, staff, student-athletes and police department to meet each other, work together and serve the community together while representing Long Beach State."
Saturday's effort was just the first in an ongoing commitment from the two organizations to work together to find an opportunity for local outreach at least once per semester.
