Long Beach, Calif. - Delainey Aigner-Swesey finished with 11 kills on .290 hitting, and Janisa Johnson and Tara Roenicke each picked up double-doubles, but 16.5 blocks by Wisconsin and .272 hitting by the Badgers led to a 25-23, 18-25, 25-17,25-16 defeat.
Johnson finished the match leading the 49ers in kills and digs for the second night in a row with 18 kills and 19 digs, but hit just .125 on the night against the Wisconsin block. Roenicke added 41 assists and 10 digs, while libero Tyler Jackson had 16 digs for The Beach.
In a very tight first set, both teams traded sideouts throughout as the teams had 14 tie scores and five lead changes. The 49ers took a lead at 18-17 on a back-row kill from Janisa Johnson, and a Julie Mikaelsen error put Long Beach State on top by two, leading to a Wisconsin timeout. The Badgers scored two straight points out of the timeout however, and regained the lead on a kill from Crystal Graff at 22-21, and Wisconsin took the set 25-23.
Down 4-1 early in set two, Long Beach State rallied to take the lead at 8-7 on a Bre Mackie kill, and then an ace from Jackson sparked a push for the 49ers. Out 17-13 on a kill from Johnson, an ace from the senior outside hitter and an error from Wisconsin led the 49ers to a 20-14 advantage on the way to a 25-18 win.
Long Beach State recovered from an early Wisconsin push to take a 13-11 lead on an Aigner-Swesey kill. With LBSU up 16-13 in the set, Wisconsin's block solidified, and the Badgers finished with 9.5 blocks in the third alone, making an eight point run to take a 21-16 lead on the way to a 25-17 win. The Badgers carried that momentum into set four, as Wisconsin took an early lead and moved on to a 25-16 win and a four-set victory.
The 49ers head back to the road next week, travelling to No. 12 Washington and Seattle University for a pair of matches in Seattle, Wash.
