LONG BEACH - Long Beach State head women's soccer coach Mauricio Ingrassia has announced the 49ers' schedule for the upcoming 2012 season. The 19-match slate features 10 home games with eight of those to be played under the new lights at George Allen Field.
"I think this schedule will challenge us appropriately to get ready for conference," Ingrassia said. "There is a good mix of preseason games. We are putting our team in a couple of different environments that will help us down the road. There are also some nice local night games for our community to be able to come out and enjoy good soccer."
LBSU is set to host Pac-12 foe Arizona in its season opener at 7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 17. Long Beach State stays home the following weekend when it entertains St. Francis (Aug. 24) and 2011 NCAA Tournament team Baylor (Aug. 26).
The 49ers will head to BYU for its first road game on Aug. 30, before returning to Long Beach to face Big Ten opponent Michigan at 6 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 2.
The squad then heads to College Station, Texas, where it will face reigning Big 12 champion Texas A&M (Sept. 7) and North Texas (Sept. 9). Long Beach State is also set to play a pair of neutral-site games against Texas Tech (Sept. 14) and Army (Sept. 16) in Fullerton.
LBSU wraps up its non-conference slate at home on Friday, Sept. 21, when it hosts San Diego at 7 p.m. The 49ers defeated the Toreros, 1-0, in the third round of the 2011 NCAA Tournament.
Long Beach State begins Big West action on the road as it heads to UC Riverside (Sept. 28) and Cal State Fullerton (Sept. 30). It will host UC Santa Barbara in its conference home opener on Oct. 5 and entertains Cal Poly two days later.
After traveling to UC Davis and Pacific, the 49ers wrap up the regular season with home games against UC Irvine (Oct. 20), Hawaii (Oct. 26) and Cal State Northridge (Oct. 28).
Long Beach State is coming off its best season in school history. Not only did the 49ers win their first NCAA Tournament game, but they advanced all the way to the Elite Eight with victories over No. 7 Pepperdine, Miami and San Diego.
LBSU finished the historic campaign with an 18-6-1 overall record, marking the program's sixth 10-win season in the last seven years. The 18 victories also eclipsed the previous single-season record of 14. In addition, the 49ers shattered the school record for goals (49), assists (52) and points (150).
Long Beach State is the two-time defending Big West Tournament champion and has claimed either a regular season or conference tournament title in five of the last six years. It has also advanced to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last four seasons.
