Davis, Calif. - Long Beach State ran into a strong pitching performance by Tom Briner, throwing a complete game shutout as the Dirtbags lost on Saturday 5-0 at UC Davis. Josh Guerra and Jeff McNeil each had a pair of hits for the Dirtbags.
Briner finished the game with 80 pitches thrown, scattering six hits over nine innings to lead the Aggies to the win.
Both teams went through the first inning with no runs scored, but in the bottom of the second, sophomore Ryan Strufing allowed his first home run of the season, a solo shot from Eric Johnson. Scott Kalush followed with another solo homer as the Dirtbags fell behind 2-0.
Strufing settled down behind a solid double-play from Juan Avila to end the third inning, but went through the fifth inning without allowing any further runs.
A walk and a single with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning ended Strufing's day, and after a sacrifice, Johnson and Kalush each came home to score a second time following RBI singles from Ryan Allgrove and Tino Lipson.
UC Davis added one final insurance run in the bottom of the eighth inning following a leadoff double by Johnson.
The teams close the series on Sunday, with Shawn Stuart taking the mound for the Dirtbags. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
