Long Beach, Calif. - Freshman outfielder Josh Guerra was selected as the Big West Field Player of the Week on Monday after leading the Dirtbags to a series win over Cal State Northridge and a half-game lead in the Big West standings.
Guerra, a freshman from Downey, Calif., went 6-for-12 against the Matadors, driving in six runs as the Dirtbags won their sixth consecutive weekend series. Guerra set a season-high for Long Beach State on Friday with four hits, driving in three runs with a double and a triple in an 8-2 victory.
Then on Sunday, Guerra hit a solo home run to give the Dirtbags a lead in the fourth inning that the team would never relinquish, later driving in two more runs with a single to lead the team to victory.
Over the weekend, Guerra slugged 1.000 with a .500 batting average and a .600 on-base percentage.
Guerra becomes the first Dirtbags position player to win the conference's weekly honor since Joey Terdoslavich in 2010. Shawn Stuart and Ryan Strufing have previously won the Big West Pitcher of the Week award this season; Strufing after pitching eight innings against California and Stuart following a complete game one-hit shutout at Cal Poly.
