Long Beach, Calif. - Shawn Stuart was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday. Stuart wins the award for the second time in his career.
Stuart helped Long Beach State win its first series in Big West Conference play on the road at Cal Poly, throwing a complete game one-hit shutout against the Mustangs on Sunday, April 1. Stuart struck out a season-high nine while letting just three runners reach base on the day.
Stuart's one-hitter was just the eighth in school history, and the first for one pitcher since Drew Carpenter accomplished the feat back in 2006. Cal Poly's one hit was the fewest for the Mustangs in the team's Division I history.
Shawn Stuart is the second Dirtbag to win the Big West Pitcher of the Week award in 2012. Ryan Strufing earned the honor on February 27 after allowing one run and five hits with five strikeouts in eight innings in a win over No. 20 California. Stuart is a previous winner of this award, taking the honor last season after giving up just three hits in seven innings to No. 15 Oregon.
