Long Beach, Calif. - Sophomore Ryan Strufing was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week, as announced by the conference office on Monday.
Strufing led the Dirtbags to a series win over No. 20 California, the second straight series win for Long Beach State to start the season. The lefty threw a career-high 8.0 innings against Cal, allowing just five hits and one run to improve to 2-0 on the season with a 1.84 ERA.
While the Dirtbags offense was held to two hits by Cal pitching, Strufing was masterful in Sunday's start, allowing just one run and keeping Long Beach State in the game throughout.
In two starts in 2012, Strufing has eight strikeouts and has not walked a batter, with a WHIP under 1.00 in 14.2 innings pitched.
Strufing becomes the first Dirtbag honored by the conference in 2012, and earns the first honor of his career. Fellow starter and teammate Shawn Stuart was named the Big West Pitcher of the Week back in 2011.
