49ERS FACE CREIGHTON IN BRACKETBUSTERS MATCHUP: Long Beach State will take its 12-game winning streak to Creighton Saturday for a crucial matchup with the Bluejays. LBSU's BracketBusters game is the third in four years where the 49ers have been paired with another team for a nationally televised game. In 2009 the 49ers lost to Green Bay 86-75, while last season the 49ers handed Montana a 74-56 loss on ESPN2. Creighton is 4-2 in televised BracketBusters game dating back to 2003.
MONSON LOOKING FOR CAREER WIN NUMBER 250: With a win at Creighton on Saturday night, Long Beach State coach Dan Monson will reach the 250-win milestone. Monson, who has 79 wins in five seasons at LBSU, is in his 15th season as a head coach with stops at Gonzaga and Minnesota before coming to Long Beach State. Monson won 52 games at GU, while winning 118 with the Gophers. Monson has won 73 games at LBSU over the last four seasons, after struggling to a 6-25 record in 2007-08 during his first season with the 49ers. Since then, he has improved LBSU's win total each season, winning 15 games in 2008-09, 17 games in 2009-10, and 22 games in 2010-11. Monson won a career-high 28 games in his second season at Gonzaga. 49ERS LOOKING FOR 15TH 20-WIN SEASON IN SCHOOL HISTORY: Long Beach State is closing in on win number 20 during the 2011-12 season. The 49ers can pick up their 20th win Saturday night at Creighton. When LBSU wins number 20, it will mark just the 15th time in school history that the 49ers have won 20 games. The 20-win season will be the second in Dan Monson's five-year tenure at LBSU. Jerry Tarkanian (1968-1973) has five 20-win season at LBSU, while Seth Greenberg (1990-96) has two. Lute Olson (1973-74), Dwight Jones (1974-78), Tex Winter (1978-83), Joe Harrington (1987-90), Wayne Morgan (1996-02) and Larry Reynolds (2006-07) all have one.
49ERS LOOKING FOR FIRST BACK-TO-BACK 20-WIN SEASONS SINCE 1972-73 AND 1973-74 SEASONS: With a win at Creighton on Saturday, Long Beach State will move its win total to 20 games for the second consecutive season. The back-to-back 20-win seasons would mark the first time the 49ers have accomplished that feat since winning 26 games during the 1972-73 season and 24 games in the 1973-74 season. In all, LBSU teams have accomplished just five back-to-back 20-win seasons with all five occurring between 1968-69 and 1973-74.
