LONG BEACH, Calif. - The No. 10 49ers couldn't overcome a 4-0 deficit in the first dropping its conference opener to No. 1 USC 13-7 Friday night at the Campus Pool. Four players scored for LBSU with three recording multiple goals.
The Trojans (17-0, 3-0 MPSF) started the game with a 5-0 run spanning 8 minutes and 59 seconds before Dimitrios Lappas found the back of the cage from the left side in the two-meter zone at 7:01 in the second.
The 49ers (18-4, 0-1 MPSF) came within three goals in the third quarter when Devin Mefford scored his first of two goals in the third.
Dan Matulis and Milos Vrzic each had a pair of goals for the 49ers while Lappas chipped in with one.
Balint Meszaros collected seven saves for the night.
