AURORA. Ore. - Sophomore Rochelle Chan fired a tournament low 6-under-par 66 in Monday's opening round of the Rose City Collegiate to lead the Long Beach State women's golf team to first-place after 36-holes.
Chan sits on top of the leaderboard of 78 players with a 2-under 142 after shooting a second round 76. Chan holds a five-stroke lead over Caitlin McCleary of Seattle (+3) and eight shots over teammate senior Monica Villarreal (+6) and two other players tied for third. Chan eclipsed her previous career low by five strokes, recording a 71 at last season's Bruin Wave Invitational.
LBSU recorded an opening round score 298 after starting the tournament on a cold and rainy morning at the par-72, 6,080-yard Langdon Farms Golf Course. Although the rain had stopped by early afternoon, gusty winds soon followed and the 49ers were able to maintain their consistent play, turning in a second-round score of 299 for a 36-hole total of 21-over 597.
The 49ers leads the field of 16 teams by 10 strokes over second-place Fresno State (+31) and 22 shots over San Francisco (+43) in third. Tournament host Portland State finished the day in eighth (+53).
Villarreal carded a 79 to start the tournament, but came back in the afternoon round to improve by five strokes for a 71 to finish second for the 49ers.
Senior Noelle Zavaleta is tied for 10th after rounds of 77 and 75 for an 8-over 152, followed by junior Simone Hoey tied for 21st after shooting a 78 and 77 (+11).
Freshman Monica Umpant (77-85) is tied for 45th at 18-over.
"We came in today knowing we were going to face some tough conditions," 49er Head Coach Joey Cerulle said. "We maintained our focus and executed our shots to the best of our abilities. I'm proud of the way we played today despite the changing weather conditions. We look forward to tomorrow's final round and trying to bring home a victory for The Beach."
Final round concludes on Tuesday with the 49ers paired with Fresno State and San Francisco and will be teeing off at 9:30 a.m. (PST).
