LONG BEACH - Long Beach State had three athletes named to the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division I All-Academic Team. Randi Hicks and Tara Ross represented the 49er women, while Rajan Bains was recognized on the men's side.
Hicks finished eighth overall in the women's javelin at the NCAA Championships with a toss of 161-02. She posted the best finish by a 49er woman at the national meet since 2007, when Kim Heinz took seventh in the javelin. Hicks' performance earned her first-team All-America honors. Hicks, who owns the school and Big West Conference record at 170-11, had three individual victories in 2011, winning the javelin at the Big West Challenge, UCSD Triton Invitational and the prestigious Drake Relays.
Ross advanced to the women's javelin finals at the NCAA West Preliminaries but just missed the cut for the NCAA Championships as she finished 16th with a mark of 153-05. Her best throw of the season came at the Mt. SAC Relays when she registered a distance of 163-08. Ross posted a top three finish in five of eight competitions, with individual titles at the Ben Brown Invitational and the Cal-Nevada Championships.
Bains competed in the hammer throw at the NCAA West Preliminaries where he placed 47th overall with a toss of 166-03. Bains helped the 49er men win the 2011 Big West title, scoring in the shot put, hammer and discus at the conference championships.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
