Can you detail your coaching path to Long Beach State? I started coaching in 2002 at Warren High School in Downey, Calif. I coached there from 2002-2007. I took a small break for a year to do sales, realized it wasn't for me and decided to coach for my old head coach Mike D'Alessandro at Golden West College, where I played from 1996-1998. At Golden West in 2009 we reached the state finals and fell short to Long Beach City College in four games. Shortly after I was asked by head coach Andy Read to be an assistant with the 49ers, and now I'm going into my third season. I'm also going into my second season as the boys Club Director of The HBC Volleyball Club and head coach of an 18's team.
Beyond winning a championship, what are your goals for the upcoming season? My goals for the upcoming season are to expand on the success of what we have built over the last two seasons. I want our guys to continue to live the life style of being the best student-athlete they can possibly be and make another run towards the playoffs and get past the MPSF semifinals. Building positive team chemistry and continuing the 49er attitude of hard work and success is the focal point of our program.
Who is an exciting new player we will see on your team next season? I think that we have a strong recruiting class of freshman coming in, but I'm looking forward to seeing the progress that the past years' redshirts and even the starting freshmen have made. We have a strong core of guys who have bought into our system of doing the right thing and acting like a true team on and off the court. Our team is hungry for success.
What is your recruiting philosophy? Personally, I want kids who want to be here at Long Beach State. I don't really care what guys did in high school or in club but what they are going to do here. The hardest thing is not just getting the most talented athletes, but getting the athletes who are willing to work and build on those talents.
How important are the summer months to the development of your team? I think the summer months are a chance for our guys to reflect on what they learned during the year and use their own personal assessments to build on new aspects of their game. Whether that's by getting stronger in the weight room or getting more touches on the beach, it's all positive for our program.
If someone asked you for a recommendation where to eat in the Long Beach area, where would you send them and what would you tell them to order? Among the many great places Long Beach has to offer, I would have to send them to Rascals on Bellflower and just ask for the coaches special: cheeseburger special, extra beef patty-no onions and the Chinese chicken salad instead of fries. Oh yeah, the drink is included - Arnold Palmer.
Outside of sports what are your hobbies? My hobbies include stand-up paddle surfing and restoring my 1971 Chevy Truck.
If you had a weekend off during the season and you weren't allowed to work, what would you do with the free time? Usually during the summer my weekends include getting an early morning surf then training on the beach for upcoming pro beach volleyball events. I'm going on my 12th season as a professional on the beach. Other activities are playing 4-man tournaments in the South Bay.
What vacation spot has been your favorite to visit? To be honest, my favorite vacation spot is right here in my backyard; Huntington, Hermosa, and Manhattan beaches are my favorite spots, so every day is a vacation for me, I'm truly living the dream!
Dodgers or Angels, and why? Lakers or Clippers, and why? Well, I guess the Angels and Dodgers are a wash... I have enjoyed both teams and we are all lucky to have both. I truly enjoy the experience of either team. Lakers for sure, only because I have played volleyball with James Worthy, Kurt Rambis, and my good friend Luke Walton on the beach, I love the Lake Show. Best ticket in town, besides The Beach!
