Dirtbags head out for summer baseball

Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State's players will continue to play throughout the summer, heading off for various collegiate summer leagues, featuring over half of the 2011 Dirtbags Roster.
Sophomore Matt Duffy and junior Mike Marjama will have the highest profile assignments, as the pair of All-Big West honorees will travel to the Orleans Firebirds of the Cape Cod League, the premier collegiate baseball wood bat league. The league is a stopping place for a number of high-profile prospects, giving players a chance to hone their skills over the summer.
Also traveling to the Northeast is starting pitcher Ryan Strufing, who will play for the Newport Gulls of the NECBL, a league specifically set up for college sophomores and juniors.
Three players each will play in the Northwoods, Alaska and Hawaii leagues. Designated hitter Ino Patron will play for the Thunder Bay Border Cats in the Northwoods League, while Jake Stassi and Michael Hill will be teammates on the La Crosse Loggers, a team that has featured a number of Dirtbags players in the past.
Jeff Yamaguchi and Jon Maciel will also be teammates in Alaska, playing in Kenai for the Peninsula Oilers, while Austin Boyle will play for the Anchorage Bucs in the same league. Ryan Donahue and Royce Murai will be teammates for the second straight season for the Hawaii Aliis, and will be joined by junior pitcher Matt Johnson.
Brennan Fulkerson will be Long Beach State's lone representative in the West Coast league, playing for the Kitsap Yellow Jackets; the remainder of the Dirtbags participating in summer ball will stay closer to home in the Far West and California Collegiate Leagues, both based locally.
