LONG BEACH, Calif. - Senior guard Brandon Nevens will receive the McDonald's Press On Award at a formal banquet on Monday night, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. in the Lakewood Youth Hall of Fame.
Nevens (Long Beach, Calif./Lakewood HS) will be presented the award, which is given for overcoming adversity or inspirational accomplishments, in honor of his comeback from an ailment that forced him to sit out the 2008-09 and 2009-10 men's basketball seasons before returning to the floor at the end of December. Nevens suffered from "compartment syndrome" in both legs after over exerting himself during a preseason workout before the 2008-09 season. After spending time in the hospital and rehabbing, Nevens rejoined the team but wasn't allowed to play for more than two years.
Nevens returned to action, after being cleared by doctors and being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA just before Christmas, and has been instrumental in the 49ers charge to a league championship, which they clinched on Thursday night. Nevens has played in 10 games and is averaging 1.5 points and 1.1 rebounds per game. He played a season-high 12 minutes twice, at Cal State Northridge and against Montana, while also playing 10 minutes at UC Davis. Nevens scored a season-high four points in a win over Cal State Fullerton on Jan. 29 and then he matched it with four points in a win over Montana on Feb. 19.
Nevens was nominated for the award by his high school coach, Matt Ruiz. For information on attending the banquet, contact the Lakewood City Hall.
