Long Beach, Calif. - In the final entry of an ongoing series honoring the 2011 Long Beach State Hall of Fame nominees, we take a look at the most decorated pitcher in Dirtbags history, Jered Weaver.
Jered Weaver won seven different national player of the year awards in a magical 2004 season, one of the best ever for any collegiate pitcher, in a year that capped off a brilliant three-year career for the Long Beach State hurler.
In that 2004 season, Weaver led the nation in wins (15) and strikeouts (213), finishing the season with a 1.62 ERA and a 15-1 record over 144 innings. That capped a career that saw Weaver post a 37-9 overall record with a 2.43 ERA and 431 strikeouts with 73 walks. He holds the Long Beach State and Big West career records in both wins and strikeouts, and also leads the Dirtbags record books in innings pitched (370.0), starts (55), and consecutive wins (14), which he set after starting the 2004 season 14-0. He set a school record with 17 strikeouts in a game, and was a two-time Big West Pitcher of the Year, earning the honor in 2003 and 2004.
Weaver was also named a first-team All-American in both of those years, becoming Long Beach State's first two-time first-team All-American.
After his collegiate career, Weaver was drafted 12th overall by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and broke into the major leagues quickly, where he has become a two-time all-star and one of the best pitchers in the game, including leading the MLB in strikeouts with 233 in 2010.
