49ers finish Stanford Invitational with strong performances

STANFORD, Calif. - Long Beach State junior Rosa Del Toro continued with another strong performance as she finished in 22nd place in the women's 6,000-meter collegiate race at the Stanford Invitational on Saturday morning at the Stanford Golf Course.

The women's team greatly improved from their seventh place finish one year ago as the 49ers placed third, recording 127 points. Host Stanford won the team championship with 41 points followed by California with 86 points.

For the second straight race, Del Toro was the top runner for the 49ers as she crossed the finish line with a time of 21:30. Sophomore Nina Moore had another strong performance as she finished eight seconds behind, finishing in 26th with a time of 21:38.

Junior Alisia Barajas placed 28th as she crossed the line at 21:40, followed by classmates Lenore Moreno in 33rd (21:47) and Liz Ramos in 34th (21:50).

Senior Jennifer Rodriguez finished in 45th at 22:07.

Sophomore Prism Garcia recorded a personal best by 15 seconds, finishing at 22:54 (88th) and junior Veronica Franco beat out her previous best by 12 seconds, finishing with a mark of 23:19 (106th)

On the men's side, the 49ers finished in 10th, tallying 261 points. Stanford won the team championship with 31 points, followed by Arkansas (43), Northern Arizona (123) and UCLA (130).

Junior Matt Maldonado was the top runner for LBSU in the men's 8,000-meter collegiate race, finishing in 28th with a time of 24:27. Maldonado recorded a personal best by 17 seconds.

Freshman Heath Reedy had an impressive performance, finishing in 53rd in a time of 24:59, followed by senior Josh Ruff, crossing the line in 57th in a time of 25:01.

Senior Steven DeCastro placed 89th (25:26), followed by freshman Andrew Garcia placing 90th (25:27) and junior Chris Walden in 101st (25:33).

Sophomore Jared Long beat out his previous best by 13 seconds, crossing the finish line at 25:41 (111th).

Senior Raul Arcos finished at 25:47 (117th) and sophomore Nick Kelley finished at 26:01 (136th).

"We're pretty excited on the women's performance today as they finished ahead of some ranked teams in the conference and in the region," 49er distance coach Patrick Cunniff said. "We had some strong performances from Rosa, Alyssa and Lenore. The girls as a group ran really well and competed hard together and pushed each other to a great performance."

"Matt had a strong race as he finished in the top-25 as he's really showed how he's matured," Cunniff added. "We felt the men had a solid showing and we hope to continue to improve and keep getting better as we work towards the conference championship and regionals."

The 49ers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 16 as they travel back up to Northern California for the Santa Clara Invitational.
