49er women claims Bronco Invitational title

SUNNYVALE, Calif. - The Long Beach State women's cross country team claimed the team title at Saturday's Bronco Invitational at Baylands Regional Park in Sunnyvale, Calif. This was the second Bronco Invitational title for the women's squad in the last three years. LBSU last won the event in 2008.

The 49ers collected 60 points, having five runners finish in the top-20. Idaho State finished in second with 151 points, followed by Sacramento State (163) and Chico State (175). Host Santa Clara finished in eighth with 227 points.

Junior Rosa Del Toro was the top runner for LBSU, crossing the finish line in seventh, recording a personal-best in the 5,000-meter with a time of 17:16.6. This was Del Toro's second top-10 finish in the last three races and the third straight as the top runner for the 49ers.

Senior Jennifer Rodriguez finished second for the 49ers, crossing the line in 10th, recording a personal-best of 17:23.9. Rodriguez beat her previous best by 30 seconds.

Sophomore Nina Moore finished third for LBSU, placing 13th with a personal-best of 17:25.8. Junior Lenore Moreno finished in 17th with a mark of 17:28.4, followed by fellow classmate Alisia Barajas four seconds behind, finishing in 18th at 17:32.1. Both Moreno and Barajas recorded personal-bests in Saturday's race.

Lauren Lodge of Pepperdine won the women' s 5K with a time of 16:50.4.

On the men's side, the 49ers finished in sixth, tallying 199 points. Lamar won the team title with 51 points, followed by Chico State (62) and UC Davis (113). Host Santa Clara placed ninth with 257 points, followed by Stanford (258) in 10th.

LBSU was led by freshman Heath Reedy as he recorded a personal-best of 24:43, finishing in 34th. Sophomores Nick Kelley and Bret Hasvold ran personal bests of 24:45.9 and 24:47.1 respectively as Kelly finished in 38th and Hasvold placed 41st. Junior Matt Maldonado placed 46th (24:51.5), followed by freshman Andrew Garcia in 65th (25:04.8)

Jon Peterson of UC Davis won the men's 8K with a time of 23:45.1.

The 49ers return to action in two weeks for the Big West Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 30, at UC Riverside.
