Del Toro takes first place at Aztec Invitational

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Long Beach State junior Rosa Del Toro was the top finisher in Saturday's 66th annual Aztec Invitational 5,000-meter women's race at Balboa Park in San Diego, crossing the finish line with a time of 18:02.3. Sophomore Nina Moore finished three seconds (18:05.6) behind, placing second for LBSU.

Junior Lenore Moreno was the third runner for The Beach to finish in the top 10, crossing the line in seventh with a mark of 18:34.1

The 49ers placed second with 61 points, finishing just six points behind team champion BYU. Biola finished in third with 64 points followed by San Diego (101), Central Arizona College (129), San Diego State (152), Northern Arizona (165) and Occidental College (238).

Sophomore Prism Garcia finished in 25th, recording a personal-best of 19:06.2 as she was 12 seconds faster from her mark of 19:18.

Freshmen Kylie Martin (37th, 19:36.5) and Kelly Caulfield (45th, 19:49.5) placed in the top 50, while sophomore Kirsten Neill (59th, 20:20.3) rounded out the top seven for LBSU.

On the men's side, freshman Andrew Garcia made his collegiate debut as he was the top runner for the 49ers, finishing in fifth at 26:05.4.

LBSU finished in third in the seven-team 8,000-meter invitational race tallying 74 points. UCLA won the team championship with 58 points, followed by Northern Arizona with 59. Central Arizona College placed fourth (75 points), followed by San Diego (112), Biola (134) and Occidental College (179).

Junior Josh Ruff crossed the line in 11th at 26:18.5, followed by fellow classmate Raul Arcos in 17th at 26:37.9.

Junior Chris Walden (21st, 26:43.3), sophomores Jared Long (22nd, 26:44.3), Nick Kelley (23rd, 26:48.0) and Naveed Kharrat (26th, 27:02.6) rounded out the top seven as all placed in the top 30.

"We're really happy with today's results," 49er distance coach Patrick Cunniff said. "We got what we wanted out of the meet. A lot of people got another chance to run in uniform and the get the experience of being in a division-I race and figuring out how to run their races well. We're now really looking forward to Stanford when will run our full squad in uniform together."

The 49ers return to action as they travel to Northern California for the Stanford Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 25.
