Long Beach, Calif. - Catcher Brad Davis and Vance Worley have both been called up to the major leagues, with Davis moving up to the Florida Marlins while Worley has been added to the Philadelphia Phillies roster. They become the 35th and 36th major leaguers in Long Beach State baseball history.
The Dirtbags have now had 13 former players with MLB service in 2010, including three All-Stars in Evan Longoria, Troy Tulowitzki and Jered Weaver.
Davis has taken a long road to reach the major leagues, but his perseverance has paid off with a trip to the show after seven seasons in the minor leagues. Davis, who was a fifth-round draft pick of the Marlins in 2004, was hitting .289 with eight home runs for AAA New Orleans in the PCL. He becomes the fourth player from the 2004 squad to play in the majors which is a Dirtbag record, joining Weaver, Jason Vargas and John Bowker.
Davis was a career .317 hitter in three seasons with the Dirtbags, starting all 59 games in his junior year with The Beach.
With his call up coming in much quicker fashion, Worley becomes the first player out of from the 2008 Big West Championship team to make the major leagues. A third-round draft pick of the Phillies, Worley was one of a school-record 11 players chosen in the 2008 MLB draft.
Worley pitched for three seasons with Long Beach State, finishing with a career ERA under four at 3.98, making 32 starts with a 12-13 record. He had 145 strikeouts and just 52 walks over his three seasons, and pitched 230.2 innings with a career-high of 103.1 innings pitched as a junior.
In 19 starts at AA Reading, Worley has a 9-4 record with a 3.20 ERA and 83 strikeouts. Worley replaces another former Dirtbag on the Phillies roster, as Drew Carpenter was optioned down to AAA Lehigh Valley.
