Long Beach State will face another tough schedule in 2010-11 with the 49ers slated to play seven games against teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament last season and two more against NIT teams.
"Our philosophy is still to schedule extremely difficult early," 49ers head coach Dan Monson said. "I think there were certain rewards for having the best strength of schedule in America in the preseason last year. We also want to make sure we don't go overboard, and this year is a good compromise of having a lot of challenges along the way but not all top 10 caliber teams. There are probably just as many top 25 teams on this schedule as last year, but not as many top 10. We are hoping that balance will get us playing better in league."
A trip to one of college basketball's traditional powers and a pair of games against Pac-10 teams highlight the 49ers' schedule. The Beach heads to Tobacco Road for the second straight season, this time to play North Carolina on Saturday Dec. 11. Last season the 49ers played at eventual national champion Duke in late December.
LBSU also has non-league games scheduled against 2010 NCAA Tournament teams Washington (Pac-10), Clemson (ACC), San Diego State (Mountain West), St. Mary's (West Coast Conference) and Utah State (Western Athletic Conference). The Beach will also travel to Arizona State (Pac-10), an NIT participant last year. Long Beach State will face Clemson in the first round of the Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands, while also possibly facing Alabama, Iowa or Xavier later in the tournament.
A season-opening game against San Diego State for homecoming highlights a home schedule that will include Loyola Marymount (WCC) and a BracketBuster game in February. The Beach also has a pseudo-home game against St. Mary's in the Honda Center in Anaheim on Saturday, Dec. 18.
"San Diego State should start the season in the top 25 in most polls," Monson added. "It will be a great atmosphere with it being homecoming. Two experienced teams right out of the gate and both of us will know a lot more about our teams after that game. I assume Loyola Marymount will be one of the top three teams in the West Coast Conference, and St. Mary's being in the Honda Center is a great game for us. It puts us where the league tournament is and so we are on that floor early in the year against a top 25 or 30 team."
