LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's basketball team is looking to quickly bounce back from its season-opening loss at Oregon State as it makes the short trip to Loyola Marymount on Monday, Nov. 15, for a 7 p.m. game at Gersten Pavilion.
SCOUTING THE LIONS
Loyola Marymount dropped its season opener to Idaho State, 63-55, on Friday, Nov. 12. Alex Cowling led the Lions with 18 points, while Candice Nichols also finished with 14. LMU returns eight letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that went 13-17. Loyola Marymount was picked to finish fourth in the West Coast Conference preseason poll, while Cowling and Renahy Young were named to the preseason All-WCC team.
SERIES RECORD
Long Beach State trails in its all-time series with Loyola Marymount, 10-3, as the Lions have won 10 in a row. The two teams squared off last year at the Walter Pyramid with LMU escaping with a narrow 75-70 victory. The 49ers are 1-5 when playing in Los Angeles.
FOR SEASON OPENERS
Long Beach State is now 28-20 in season openers after falling at Oregon State on Nov. 13. This was the first time in three years the 49ers began the season on the road. The Beach will play its first home game on Friday, Nov. 19, when it welcomes Oregon to the Walter Pyramid. LBSU is 34-13 in home openers.
YOUNG GUNS
The Beach has a young team in 2010-11 with just five letterwinners back from last season. The 49er roster features seven freshmen, three sophomores, three juniors and three seniors. In its season opener, Long Beach State started three true freshmen, one redshirt sophomore and one senior.
ROAD WARRIORS
The Beach faces another tough preseason schedule with four Pac-10 opponents and at least one 2010 NCAA Tournament team on its slate. What makes it even more difficult is that eight of the 49ers' first 10 games will be on the road. LBSU traveled to Oregon State for its season opener on Saturday, Nov. 13, and returns to action two days later when it makes the short trip to Loyola Marymount (Nov. 15). The Beach then hosts Oregon in its home opener on Nov. 19 before hitting the road for the next two weeks. During that span, Long Beach State will participate in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown in Honolulu, Hawaii, and the Gene Hackerman Invitational in Houston, Texas.
BACK TO THE WYNN-ING WAY
Long Beach State women's basketball is rich in tradition with two Final Four teams, 11 NCAA Tournament appearances and 21 conference championships. The 49ers, however, have not advanced to the NCAA tourney since 1992 and their last Big West title came in 2005-06. Second-year head coach Jody Wynn is looking to bring those glory days back to The Beach and her squad took a step in the right direction last year as it nearly doubled its win total from the 2008-09 season. LBSU also finished fourth in the conference, advancing to the Big West Tournament quarterfinals just a year after missing out on the postseason.
49ERS PICKED TO FINISH SEVENTH IN BWC
Long Beach State was picked to finish seventh in the 2010-11 Big West Conference preseason poll as voted on by the media. The 49ers received 84 points, finishing ahead of Pacific (51) and Cal State Northridge (42). UC Davis was selected to repeat as Big West champions, capturing 16 first-place votes and 210 total points. Cal Poly came in second with 183 points and was followed by UC Riverside (182), UC Santa Barbara (164), Cal State Fullerton (113) and UC Irvine (96).
UP NEXT
Long Beach State hosts Oregon in its home opener on Friday, Nov. 19. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. at the Walter Pyramid.
