LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team saw its seven-game unbeaten streak come to an end as it dropped a hard-fought 1-0 decision to 15th-ranked UC Irvine Thursday afternoon at George Allen Field.
The 49ers fell to 10-4-2 on the season and 3-1-1 in Big West Conference action, while league leading UCI improved to 14-1-2, 6-0-0 BWC.
The Beach finished with seven shots as seniors Lindsay Bullock and Karina Camacho led the way with two attempts each. Junior Nicole Sweetman tallied the 49ers' lone shot on goal. Junior goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough had three saves in the loss.
It was a defensive battle from the opening kick off, but the Anteaters were in control in the first half. UCI out shot LBSU, 6-1, and also held a 6-to-1 advantage in corner kicks. CoCo Goodson put the visitors on the board at the 42:22 mark when she took a cross in the middle of the box and drilled the ball to the lower right corner.
The 49ers came out of the break in attack mode but were unable to crack UC Irvine's defense. The Beach out shot the Anteaters, 6-2, in the second period.
LBSU's best opportunity to even the score came in the 63rd minute. Sweetman headed a lob shot toward the upper netting, but UCI goalkeeper Danielle de Seriere got a hand on it, punching the ball off the crossbar and back into play. Camacho was in the box, but was unable to control the rebound and the Anteaters cleared it out.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field on Sunday, Oct. 24, when it entertains Cal State Northridge at 1 p.m. The Beach will honor its seniors before the start of their final regular season home game.
