LONG BEACH, Calif. - Stephan Gilling scored his 1,000th career point when he canned a 3-pointer on Long Beach State's first possession to give the 49ers a 3-2 lead over Cal Poly. That's about the last thing that went the 49ers way as they never led again losing 90-79 in a Big West Conference game on Saturday at the Walter Pyramid.
Cal Poly (6-10, 3-2 Big West) outscored Long Beach State (8-10, 2-3 Big West) 50-36 in the paint and outrebounded the 49ers 54-30 (including 18 offensive boards) to build its lead to as many as 19 before holding off The Beach down the stretch. The Mustangs finished making 51.6 percent of their shots, while LBSU connected on just 40.6 percent.
Sophomore T.J. Robinson led the 49ers with 20 points and six rebounds, while junior Greg Plater had 16 points and sophomore Larry Anderson scored 14 points and grabbed six boards. Sophomore Casper Ware had six assists and four steals, but scored just two points, 10.3 below his season average.
David Hanson led five Mustangs in double-figures with 22 points and eight rebounds. Jordan Lewis added 16 points and nine rebounds, while Will Taylor (nine boards), Lorenzo Keeler (six boards) and Shawn Lewis (five rebounds) all had 12 points.
