LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team got off to a strong start and defeated the Pepperdine Waves by a score of 3-1 Friday afternoon at George Allen Field.

LBSU improved its record on the season to 4-3, while Pepperdine fell to 4-2.

Junior Lindsay Bullock paced the 49ers with three shots, one goal, and one assist, while sophomore Nicole Sweetman and freshman Shannon Bullock each added their first career goals at The Beach.

Sophomore Nicole Hubbard and junior Kristen Kiefer also took two shots apiece.

The 49ers got on the board at the 14:40 mark when Sweetman headed in a beautiful flip throw-in by junior Chantel Hubbard.

The Waves would even up the match in the 28th minute when a free kick from Myriah Stockman was headed into the far post by Callie Payetta.

The 49ers would not let up and scored again at 39:06 off of a corner kick from sophomore Shawna Gordon that went through several Wave defenders before Lindsay Bullock found the upper right netting, marking her third goal of the season.

LBSU struck again at 44:22 when a lead pass by Lindsay Bullock was taken by younger sister Shannon Bullock and placed over Pepperdine's oncoming goalkeeper to an open net.

The second half was an intense battle as the Waves outshot Long Beach 8-2, but were but were unable to score as the strong play of the 49er defense and midfield stifled the Pepperdine attack.

Long Beach State held the overall advantage in shots, 13-11, and also had five corner kicks to Pepperdine's two.

The 49ers will hit the road for two games, starting at San Diego State (Sept. 20) before heading to Loyola Marymount (Sept. 25). LBSU then returns to George Allen Field for their Big West Conference opener against Pacific (Oct. 1) at 3 p.m.
