LONG BEACH - The Long Beach State women's soccer team (1-0-0) picked up its fourth consecutive season-opening win on Sunday afternoon as it blanked Fresno State (0-2-0), 2-0, at George Allen Field.
Sophomore Shawna Gordon led the 49ers with a goal and an assist, while junior Lindsay Bullock also found the back of the net. Bullock's tally was the 16th of her career, putting her in a tie for sixth on the LBSU all-time charts.
The 49ers dented the scoreboard at the 12:22 mark as Gordon sent a corner kick into the box where Bullock headed it into the upper left corner. Although LBSU was unable to score again in the first half, it dominated possession, outshooting Fresno State, 10-5.
Long Beach State struck again in the 70th minute when Gordon took a corner kick that curved in and slipped through Fresno State goalkeeper Kaitlyn Revel's hands and into the far corner.
Overall, the 49ers won the battle in shots (15-to-6), shots on goal (8-to-0) and corner kicks (8-to-1). Junior Karina Camacho led The Beach with six shots, while sophomore Nicole Hubbard had three. Sophomore goalkeeper Emily Kingsborough, who played all 90 minutes, recorded the shutout in her first start of her career.
Six different Bulldogs fired off a shot, while Revel, the preseason Western Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year, had six saves in goal.
Long Beach State returns to George Allen Field on Sunday, Aug. 30, when it entertains fifth-ranked UCLA at 5 p.m. PT.
