Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State Baseball is working to help another member of the Long Beach baseball community, assisting East Long Beach Pony player Dallas Humphreys, an 11-year old with leukemia, in his fight against the disease and his family's work to help other leukemia patients like him.
For a team that has been touched with tragedy like the Dirtbags, it's a natural partnership to help a young man whose love for baseball and the community are unmatched.
Long Beach State, along with the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) will be offering a chance to register for marrow donation three times before the end of the 2009 baseball season. Marrow donation is one of the most important steps to fighting leukemia, as it is estimated that nearly 10,000 children and adults could benefit from a marrow or stem cell transplant each year.
On Saturday, May 2, Sunday, May 3, and Sunday, May 17, the team and the NMDP will have a registration center set up. All it takes is a moment to sign a registration form and get a cotton swab in your mouth to be added to the Be The Match registry, where you will donate only if you have been found to be a match, with an opportunity to directly affect someone's life like Dallas.
