LONG BEACH - Senior Jennifer Onyeagbako suffered a season-ending injury when she was hit with a hammer throw at the Beach Invitational on Saturday, April 25.
The injury is non-life threatening but Onyeagbako will be unable to continue competition in her final year at The Beach.
"This is a tremendous loss not only for our program but it is a major setback for her," said 49er head coach Andy Sythe. "She was on the path of going well beyond the collegiate level in this sport."
Onyeagbako has been the 49ers' top performer in the throws as she owns the team's best marks of the season in the hammer, shot put and discus. A 2007 NCAA discus finalist, Onyeagbako had already notched a regional qualifying mark in her signature event along with the hammer.
A 2009 team captain, Onyeagbako owns three school records among an elite list of athletes that have come through The Beach. She established the longest hammer toss earlier this season at 199-05, while she also tops the charts in the discus (179-04) and indoor weight throw (58-01.25).
