Beach track and field competes at Ben Brown Invitational

FULLERTON, Calif. - A handful of 49ers saw their first action of the 2009 campaign as the outdoor season got underway for the Long Beach State track and field team Saturday at the Ben Brown Invitational in Fullerton.
Senior Jennifer Onyeagbako led the 49er women, winning both the shot put (44-05.50) and the discus (161-06), while notching a third-place performance in the hammer throw with a mark of 180-08.
Also in the field events, senior Alex Shaw took third in the javelin (145-03), while classmate Tiana Johnson was LBSU's top finisher in the triple jump with a leap of 37-03.00, which was good enough for third place. In the pole vault, senior Katelyn Beighton tied for fourth and recorded the ninth-best mark in school history at 11-07.75. Freshman Janelle Coulter added a strong showing in the high jump as she tied for third (5-05.00).
Over on the track, freshman Ashley Campbell placed second in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish line in 24.79 seconds. Campbell also took fifth overall in the 100m at 12.18 seconds.
Senior Ejiro Okoro was the top collegiate finisher in the 800-meter run, clocking in at 2:14.95, while classmate Carly Harris took fourth in the 5000-meter race, running the second-fastest mark in school history at 16 minutes, 45.60 seconds.
On the men's side, junior Gabe Rodriguez won the javelin with a mark of 198-04 and classmate Rodney Hawkins finished fourth in the triple jump (47-08.00).
Sophomore Nimrod Piggee recorded a third-place showing in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.04 seconds. Senior Austin Fowler, meanwhile, had a pair of top five finishes, clocking in at 21.65 seconds in the 200-meter dash and 10.73 seconds in the 100m. Junior Kenneth Medwood added a seventh-place performance in the 400-meter (48.72).
Long Beach State will continue the outdoor season at the USC Invitational, March 20-21.
