Beach men lose at UC Riverside in double overtime

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Freshman Larry Anderson scored a career-high 25 points but it wasn't enough as Long Beach State lost 73-70 in double overtime at UC Riverside in a Big West Conference game on Wednesday.
The Beach (12-11, 7-4 Big West) fell out of first place in the Big West Conference for the first time this season thanks to the loss and a win by Cal State Northridge over Cal Poly.
Both teams had a chance to win the game before it went into the second overtime. In regulation Long Beach State held a 57-52 lead with less than two minutes to play but the Highlanders (14-9, 6-5 Big West) scored five straight points to tie the game with 14 seconds to play. Greg Plater's contested 3-pointer rimmed out at the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
In the first OT, UCR scored the opened the period with a seven-point run in the opening 3:12 of the overtime period to complete a 12-0 run and take control. LBSU battled back going on a 7-0 run in the final 1:03 to tie it with 0.2 seconds on a floater by Anderson.
In the second overtime, Long Beach State scored first, but Riverside answered with nine of the next 13 points to take a three-point lead with five seconds to play. The 49ers had one last chance to send it to a third overtime but Casper Ware's 3-pionter at the buzzer rimmed out to give Riverside the win.
Anderson finished the game making 10-of-17 shots and 5-of-7 free throws. Stephan Gilling added 14 points and T.J. Robinson had 13 points and seven boards. Aaron Scott led the Highlanders with 26 points and 10 boards, while Kyle Austin scored 23 points.
