LONG BEACH-- The Bickerstaff Academic Center benefiting Long Beach State student-athletes, was one of five centers nationwide honored for exemplary practices in NACDA's Advising Student-Athletes: A Collaborative Approach to Success.
The athletics department was one of just 11 universities in July, which served on a panel at the NACDA conference for student-athletes. The discussion centered around the "best practices" for student-athlete academic counseling and support.
The center, named after Debbie and Glen Bickerstaff, moved into the new academic center in June, 2006 and provides advising for over 300 current and recently graduated student-athletes. The center's main objective is for student-athletes to graduate, advising them on the appropriate classes, how to study in those classes and how to use what they learned to get a job following their athletic careers.
The Athletics Department in June scored extremely well in the NCAA Academic Progress Rates (APR) data. Long Beach State did not have one team below the minimum standard score of 925.
The 49ers had four teams post perfect scores of 1,000 in the 2006-07 academic year. Men's cross country, men's volleyball, women's basketball and women's volleyball all attained perfect scores. All 18 sports were above the 925 minimum during the 2006-07 year.
