Cambridge, Mass. - Long Beach State made it look easy again, dropping Dartmouth in straight sets 25-11, 25-8, 25-14 to improve to 7-1 overall and 2-0 on the day. Nicole Vargas had five kills, 26 assists and seven digs to bring the 49ers to victory.
Another balanced effort from the 49ers led to a second easy victory Friday. Quincy Verdin led the 49ers with 11 kills, while Caitlin Ledoux added 10. Overall, the 49ers had six players that had five or more kills on the match. Also helping the offense were nine service aces from the team, led by Laura Schuck who had a career-high 3 aces.
Defensively, the 49ers had a huge advantage in digs over the Big Green, 48-30, led by Ashley Lee who set a season high with 18 digs while adding six kills and five assists in the three-game match.
The 49ers had control throughout, only trailing twice in the entire match, both times by a single point in the early portions of sets two and three. Long Beach State had 8 blocks to Dartmouth's 5, and hit .312 overall while forcing a second straight opponent into negative hitting. The Big Green finished the match with just 12 kills, while they made 18 errors overall for -.072 average.
Long Beach State returns to action in the Harvard Invitational tomorrow. First, the 49ers will play another morning match against American University beginning at 8 a.m. Pacific. Then the team will finish their time in Cambridge by playing the host Crimson at 4:30 p.m. in the tournament finale.
