49ers Remain Perfect Following Tournament

LONG BEACH-- Naomi Washington had 14 kills and tied her career-high with six blocks to lead No. 24-ranked Long Beach State (3-0) to a perfect first weekend, following a 23-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-17 win over Missouri State (1-2) on the second day of the Long Beach State Invitational.
Caitlin Ledoux added 10 kills and 18 digs to finish off a solid first weekend in a 49er uniform, while Cat Highmark had 12 kills and Nicole Vargas had her second double double of 48 assists and 11 digs. Iris Murray had 27 digs in a solid first weekend back from knee surgery, as the 49ers hit .389 in the final set and .203 for the match.
Washington's three straight kills closed out the match, at 23-15 in the fourth. LBSU built the lead from a assist at 15-12 and never looked back. A Highmark kill made it 20-15, before Washington took over to close it out.
Washington and Highmark traded kills in game three to lead them to a 25-19 win. Highmark's kills gave the 49ers a 21-17 and 23-18 advantage, while Washington's kills made it 16-11 and 22-18.
The 49ers evened the match at 25-20, as Highmark's kill put the 49ers up 24-19 en route to the win. Ledoux scored a kill to give the 49ers a 21-18 lead as MSU was forced to use a timeout a play later, trailing by four. Eight straight points put the 49ers up 9-4 to start, before Highmark's kill made it 16-12. MSU had closed to within 12-11 following their 11th block of the set.
Missouri State won game one, 25-23, after the 49ers fought off four set points to close to within one on a Quincy Verdin kill. A slow start for the 49ers saw then trail 8-3 early, before Ledoux's kill closed the gap to 17-14. LBSU hit just .093.
The 49ers are next in action when they travel to Florida for three matches next weekend, beginning at Florida State on September 4.
INDIANA 3, SAN FRANCISCO 0
LONG BEACH-- Indiana (1-2) was able to fight off a winless road trip, as they defeated San Francisco (1-2) 25-13, 25-12, 25-18 on the second day of the Long Beach State Invitational. Indiana had fallen to Missouri State earlier in the day and to the 49ers yesterday, while the Dons had split the first day's action.
Kelsey Hall led the Hoosiers with 15 kills and 14 digs, along with a .333 attack percentage. Ashley Benson added 11 kills and eight blocks as Indiana hit .297.
With USF charging, a block assist followed by two attack errors put Indiana up 17-11 in the final set. The Dons hit just .036 for the match. Carly Babin had nine kills to led the Dons.
Indiana took a commanding two-set lead following a 25-12 win. Indiana hit .379, while the Dons hit just .029. USF, after a rough start, got back into it at 16-10, following a kill by Addie Webster. Indiana ran off nine of the first 11 points in game two, forcing another USF timeout.
The Hoosiers won game one, 25-13, paced by a .343 hitting percentage. Indiana kept themselves in front with a block assist, at 18-11, after a Hall kill forced a USF timeout and gave Indiana a 13-7 lead in the first set. The Hilltoppers had as many kills (7) as errors in the first set.
MISSOURI STATE 3, INDIANA 1
LONG BEACH-- Missouri State (1-1) held off Indiana to defeat the Hoosiers 26-24, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-21, in the first match of the second day of the Long Beach State Invitational. Addie Foley added 15 kills and a .375 attack percentage, while Beth Fuller had nine of her 11 kills over the final three sets, and hit .400
Erica Short had 28 kills and hit .451 in the loss for Indiana, as the Hoosiers hit .307 as a team. MSU countered with a .325 attack percentage.
Foley's block made it 24-21, after a triple block gave MSU a 19-15 lead in the final set. Indiana could never close to less than two points the final half of the set.
Indiana took the third set, 25-21, after two straight kills by Short gave Indiana a 23-21 lead in game three. IU hit .412 to get back in it.
Foley participated on a block assist in game two to give the Bears a 20-17 advantage en route to a 25-21 win. MSU hit .429 in the second set. Missouri State took game one 26-24 on a kill by Foley, after Indiana stifled the first set point following a service error. But a blocking error led to the second set point and Foley finished with four kills in the first set.
