WASHINGTON DC--Long Beach State now has a "Dirty" Dozen in the Majors in 2008 with the announcement that 2005 draft pick, Marco Estrada, was called up to the Washington Nationals
Estrada spent parts of three years in the minors, never reaching above Single-A prior to this year. Estrada was 1-2 with an 0.74 ERA over his last four starts at Triple-A Columbus and went 9-6 in 25 starts between Columbus and Double-A Harrisburg. He ranked second amongst National minor leaguers in strikeouts (119) and third in ERA (3.09). He came into the season 9-12 with a 4.55 ERA over 36 professional appearances.
Estrada was 8-3 with a 2.43 ERA in 18 games as a starter for LBSU in 2005. The junior college transfer turned his only season with the program into a sixth round selection for Washington.
He is the second player from the 2005 LBSU draft class to reach the Majors, joining Rockie shortstop Troy Tulowitzki. Two other players from that team, Cesar Ramos (Padres) and Steve Hammond (Giants), are currently in Triple-A.
Overall, the Dirtbag Baseball Program has had 12 players in the Majors this season: John Bowker (Giants) and Evan Longoria (Rays), who both made their Major League debuts in April, Tulowitzki, Jered Weaver (Angels), Bobby Crosby (Athletics), Carlos Muniz (Mets), Paul McAnulty (Padres), Jeremy Reed (Mariners), Jason Giambi (Yankees), Chris Gomez (Pirates) and Steve Trachsel (Orioles).
In addition, 25 players played professionally in the minor leagues in 2008.
LBSU now has had 32 players in its history make the Major Leagues.
