Evan Longoria did not merely call Jason Giambi a fellow Long Beach State 49er. The baseball team goes by a different nickname, a grittier, sloppier handle, so that was how Longoria referred to him.
"A fellow Dirtbag. I'll take that as a compliment," Giambi swiftly said.
Longoria, the rookie third baseman for the Tampa Bay Rays, and Giambi, the veteran first baseman for the Yankees, did not play together at Long Beach State. But they easily recalled what it was like to be a little dirty and a little derelict, in good ways, during their college days.
The two former Long Beach State players were at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night, and they are both chasing the final spot on the American League All-Star team. Longoria and Giambi are among five players who are part of an online vote to become the 32nd All-Star.
