Long Beach, Calif. - For the second year in a row, the 49ers were picked to finish second in the Big West as announced by the conference in the Big West Preseason Coaches' Poll. The poll is voted on by the head coaches of all nine Big West schools.
The 49ers, despite losing the services of four-time All-American Alexis Crimes, have a number of key players returning, including 1st-team All-Big West outside hitter Quincy Verdin, All-Big West honorable mention setter Nicole Vargas, and All-Freshman team opposite Ashley Lee. Those three starters will be joined by the nation's 10th-best recruiting class as named by PrepVolleyball.com.
Cal Poly, last season's Big West champs, was unanimously picked to repeat in that position, earning nine first-place votes for 81 total points. The 49ers were an easy second place with 68 points, followed by UC Irvine with 60 points and Pacific with 55.
