LONG BEACH--Long Beach State relievers Adam Wilk (Buena Park) and Jason Markovitz (Santa Cruz) were each named all-stars in their respective summer leagues.
Wilk, who is pitching in the prestigious Cape Cod League, will be a reserve for the All-Star Game next weekend. Wilk has produced a 1.96 ERA over 13 relief appearances this summer, striking out 23 and walking just two over 23.0 innings. After giving up four runs on June 22, he has allowed just two earned runs over his last nine appearances (16.1 innings).
"Wilk has shown excellent command in his 13 appearances this summer," said Orleans Radio Announcer Brett Brecheisen. "He attacks the strike zone with any pitch, in any situation and when you can throw strikes in this league on a consistent basis, you're going to succeed. He works quickly, gets hitters out and is a tremendous asset to the team both on the field and off of it."
Brecheisen also mentioned Wilk had been a regular at Orleans Youth Clinics and a fan favorite on the Massachusetts island.
A quartet of former Dirtbags were also all stars in the Cape, including: Major League All Star and rookie, Evan Longoria (2005), this year's third round pick Shane Peterson (2007) and Pirates prospect Jared Hughes (2005), all starters in the mid-summer classic. LBSU's all-time RBI leader and catcher Bryan Kennedy (1999) was also an all star, later getting drafted by the Twins.
Markovitz was selected for Sunday's New England Collegiate League All Star Game, going 4-0 with an 0.45 ERA over 14 relief appearances for North Shores. Markovitz has struck out 20 and walked eight, over 20.0 innings, as opponents are batting .188 against the lefthander. He ranks fourth in the league in ERA.
Markovitz and Wilk were part of a Dirtbag pitching staff under Pitching Coach Jon Strauss, which led the nation in fewest walks allowed and ranked second nationally in ERA (3.20). Five pitchers from that staff were drafted in June.
Also having a solid summer is outfielder Jonathan Jones, who ranks amongst Alaska League leaders in average (.324), runs (26) and steals (10-of-14) playing for the Anchorage Glacier Pilots. Jones was an honorable mention All-Big West pick as a freshman.
