TAMPA BAY--A Dirtbag is an All-Star.
Former Long Beach State first round pick and current Tampa Bay rookie, Evan Longoria, was voted via an online vote at MLB.com as the American League's final All-Star for Tuesday's game at Yankee Stadium.
Longoria edged out Jermaine Dye of the White Sox, and former Dirtbag and current Yankee first baseman Jason Giambi for the final slot. More than 56 million people voted online from Sunday night through Thursday afternoon via the Big League website.
He is the third former LBSU player to make an All-Star squad, joining Steve Trachsel in 1996 and Giambi, a five-time All-Star (2000-04).
Longoria, who played the 2005 and 2006 seasons at LBSU, became the 31st former 49er to make the Major Leagues doing so in April. Since then, he has batted .281 with 16 home runs and 53 RBIs for the AL East Leading Rays. On Wednesday, he was named the AL Rookie of the Month.
Longoria is one of 11 LBSU players in the Majors this season. The former Big West Player of the Year, second team All-American and Golden Spikes Award Finalist, batted .336 in two seasons at LBSU.
