Mendez and U20 Mexico Finish Third at Regional Championships

PUBELA, MEXICO--- Long Beach State sophomore-to-be Janet Mendez (Palmdale) started and played 72 minutes for the Under-20 Mexican National Team, as Mexico finished third at the CONCACAF Regional Championships at Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla, Mexico on Saturday.
Mexico defeated Costa Rica 3-2 in penalty kicks, as the Mexicans took a lead in the 28th minute, before Costa Rica tied it in the 48th minute. Both teams trade goals in overtime, before Mexico won on penalty kicks.
With the win, Mexico qualifies for the U-20 World Cup in Chile in November. Canada won the championship, defeating the U.S.1-0.
Canada advanced to the finals after defeating Mexico 2-1, while Team USA defeated Costa Rica 4-0. Mendez played all 90 minutes in the loss to the Canadians.
In pool play, Mexico defeated Cuba 7-0 and Trinidad 3-0. Mendez did not play against Cuba, but played 56 minutes against Trinidad.
Mendez as a freshman for Long Beach State scored one goal in 10 matches for the Big West Champion 49ers.
