Long Beach, Calif. - After eliminating top-seeded Long Beach State earlier in the day, the second-seeded University of San Diego (44-16) avenged a shutout loss yesterday to the Bulldogs of Fresno State (39-28) by pounding out a 15-1 win Sunday night in the Long Beach Regional at Blair Field.
The two teams will now play for the regional championship Monday night at 6 p.m. at Blair Field.
Kyle Blair (8-4) did not allow a hit until the top of the fifth inning for the Toreros. Blair went seven innings giving up just one run on four hits while striking out nine.
The story of the night was the USD bats as they took advantage of 11 Bulldogs walks with 13 hits of their own. Four hitters had multi-hit games and in only two innings, the fourth and sixth, did the Toreros not put a tally in the runs column.
Center fielder Josh Romanski smacked a team-leading four hits while right fielder James Meador knocked in four as well. The bookends of the lineup were not to be outdone as well. Number nine hitter, catcher Logan Gelbrich belted a two-run homer, his eighth of the year, as part of a four-run second inning while the leadoff man, left fielder Kevin Muno reached in all six plate appearances and scored a game-high five runs.
Starter Justin Miller (6-3) went just 2 2/3 innings allowing six runs on five hits with six walks and a pair of hit batsmen to take the loss for the Bulldogs.
