Long Beach, Calif. - Long Beach State had ten athletes selected for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation 2008 Indoor Track & Field All-Academic Team as announced by the MPSF office. The team honors student-athletes who find success in the classroom as well as in competition.
To be eligible, athletes needed a 3.0 GPA or better combined with participation in half of a team's indoor events. Long Beach State, participating in just three meets, needed an athlete to be involved in two meets to qualify, a standard that held out a number of deserving athletes for the indoor season that will be honored as part of the outdoor All-Academic team released by the Big West following the end of the outdoor year.
High Jumper Alex Black and 800m specialist Hudson Wilvers were the men's representatives for Long Beach State on the team. The 49ers also had eight women honored by the MPSF. A pair of pole vaulters, Anastasia Kholev and Jill Reynolds, were honored as were jumper Miia Mobley and Kristina Price from current field athletes. Heptathlete Katie Black also was selected along with middle distance runner Ekiro Okoro. Long Beach State also had two athletes not participating in the 2008 outdoor season qualify in sprinter Jasmine Winfield and thrower Jen Onyeagbako.
"We've always emphasized academics here at Long Beach State," said head coach Andy Sythe. "It's great to see our athletes recognized not just for their athletic success but also for their accomplishments in the classroom."
